Week 6 Science Methods Blog Post

Butterflies

Pollination

Turtle T-Chart

1.) What did you learn this week?

This week we looked at the butterflies which have now grown, we spent some time with our plants making sure that they still get the pollination step. We took dried bees and rubbed them on the petals so that the plants can become pollinated. I thought this was interesting since I thought the bees had to be alive to do so. But as long as the flowers become pollinated then thats all that matters. We then did an activity with sea turtles. We looked at their life expectancy's and played a game to try and stay alive. Overall I leanred more about the pollination steps and turtles.

2.) How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?

I think I can see myself using the turtle game activity in my future classroom. We had a paper activity and got random numbers and letters to try and stay alive. I think its very informational on the things turtles have to try and live through. And makes me want to try and create less trash. I think in the science portion of my class someday this would be a fun activity to help my students learn and understand some of the difficulties there are in the wild life. I also think they would enjoy it.

3.) What are new or remaining questions?

One of the questions I have revolves around the pollination of plants. Does the bee being dead still work the same as if the bee was alive, and how so? Also will we ever move our plants outside in the dirt rather then keeping them in their little foam crates in the classroom?

  1. Hi Alyce! I totally agree with your second response- I will definitely be planning to use a similar activity in my classroom to teach about how the "odds" are sort of against sea turtles surviving! I think the activity could be expanded to involve many different animals, and students could each represent a different animal in a given ecosystem.

  2. Hi Alyce!
I also could see myself using the turtle interactive game in my classroom. I thought it was a great way to get us involved and to learn interesting content at the same time. Overall, great work this week!
